To say that I love novels is an understatement; they are more of an obsession of mine. Physically, I love the feel of a book in my hands (not a fan of the eBook craze), flipping from page to page and the sense of accomplishment as I near the end, the smell of a new hardback, and the feel of an old favorite paperback that’s been through the day-to-day wear and tear of being shoved around in my purse.
Most of all, my love of books and reading comes from my love of fantasy and my desire and wishful thinking that there’s more to this mundane life than what meets the eye.
I read a ton of young adult fiction – partly because it’s the genre I’m writing myself and want to learn and know what else is already out there – but mostly because they center around my favorite themes: innocence, fantasy, love, friendship, mystery, the unthinkable and the unimaginable.
I love that when you’re a kid you believe in everything, whether it’s Santa or Never Never Land, and find it sad that as we grow older that “anything is possible” sense of wonder and excitement is left behind.
I think this is why I love the young adult fantasy fiction genre so much. I still desperately want to believe that maybe, possibly, magic exists, and vampires just might be out there walking among us :)
Two quotes that I absolutely love:
One is from John Lennon…
“I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So, I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?”
The other was by the Mad Hatter from this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time. I heard it and thought “yes, he gets it”:
“Stories…what’s a story?…storybooks are based on what? Imagination. Where’s that come from? It has to come from somewhere. You know what the issue is with this world? Everyone wants some magical solution for their problems and everyone refuses to believe in magic.”
It’s for all of these reasons (and then some) that I’ll be writing book recommendations of my favorites at least once a month. I try to read about one book per week, so there may be more.
That being said, I would love for you to recommend your favorites to me as well – any genre, I’ll read anything! Feel free to leave a comment or contact me through Twitter.
Happy Reading! xoxo
